Census 2011
NEW DELHI, Mar 31: India's population has grown by 181 million people over the past decade to 1.21bn, according to the 2011 census.
The census also reveals a continuing preference for boys -
Statistics for the past 10 years show fewer girls than boys are being born or surviving.
They show 914 girls were born for every 1,000 boys under the age of six, compared with 927 for every 1,000 boys in 2001 census.
Indians now make up 17% of the world's population.
The statistics show India's massive population growing at a significant rate -
India is now home to a whopping 17.5 per cent population -
India now has as many people as these countries put together: of the United States, Indonesia, Brazil, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Japan.
But the rate of that growth is slower than at any time since independence in 1947. The 2011 census charts a population increase of 17.6%, compared with one of 21.5% over the previous decade.
In the field of education there was good news, with the census showing the literacy rate going up to 74% from about 65% in the last count.
India launched the 2011 census last year. The exercise costs in the region of Rs 22 billion.
Some 2.7 million officials visited households in about 7,000 towns and 600,000 villages, classifying the population according to gender, religion, education and occupation.

Among the states and Union territories, Uttar Pradesh is the most populous state with 199 million people and Lakshadweep the least populated at 64,429.
The combined population of UP and Maharashtra is bigger than that of the US.

ITANAGAR, Mar 31: The youths of Arunachal have been battling hard for employment opportunities in the absence of any major industries in state. Majority of educated Arunachalees pin hopes on government job for better life.
Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu often tries to sell his hydro dream to people of Arunachal claiming it will generate employment opportunities for local Arunachalees.
However not many Arunachalees knows that beside hydropower projects, Arunachal Pradesh government has opened up state to mining barons from all over country. As per the information gathered through RTI, state government has granted prospecting mining license to various groups to start mining operation in different locations. Some of the major industrial group which have been awarded mining license include M/S Trident Mineral Resources Pvt. Ltd of Bangalore, M/s Satyam & Minerals Ltd, M/s US Roofs Ltd, M/s US Mines and Minerals Ltd, M/s Nagur Minerals Pvt. Ltd and M/s Dronagiri Minerals Pvt. Ltd. These groups will extract minerals like limestone, dolomite, marble, graphite, lead, zinc, copper and gold from Arunachal. The districts which it will cover include West Kameng, Anjaw, West Siang and Lohit. Majority of these projects were granted license in the year 2010 by state government.
While industrial development is always welcome but one wonders how feasible these projects will be in an ecological fragile state like Arunachal. Extraction of minerals from hills can cause heavy damage to the surrounding environment.
Environmental experts fear that reckless extraction of minerals will spoil flora and fauna. “No doubt government and companies will claim that they have got required clearance from the environment ministry. But we all know that ministry is part of system. Mining activities have almost destroyed virgin forest in Chattisgarh and Jharkhand. I can see similar situation repeating in Arunachal,” said a Delhi based environmental activist.
Also if these projects are really under the operation, is not it the duty of state government to give employment opportunities to Arunachalee youths in the projects? Besides, state government has never come out in open forum to inform people of Arunachal about these mining projects. What is the nature of MOU/MOA and how do people of Arunachal stand to gain from these projects in the long run?
AUSDSU calls 24-
MMS scandal
ITANAGAR, Mar 31: The All Upper Subansiri District Students’ Union (AUSDSU) has decided
to call 24-
Blaming the ‘weak’ administration of Upper Subansiri district which leads to present situation, the union said that it has lost faith on the police department and the district administration.
Meanwhile, All Taliha Paying Area Collegian Forum (ATPACF) has extended its support to the 24 hrs bandh call given by AUSDSU.
The Forum demanded immediate arrest of the accused persons in MMS scandal and termination from their service.
It also appealed the civil society to join the proposed rally in protest against MMS scandal at Itanagar on April 9 next.
All Tagin Students’ Union (ATSU) demanded the Upper Subansiri district administration to initiate action against all the MMS scandal accused within 12 days failing which the union will launch agitations.

Vehemently condemning the Daporijo MMS scandal, All University Tagin Students Joint Action Committee has demanded early arrest of the main culprit ASI Bo, who has been absconding since he got interim bail from Capital Magistrate.
While expressing surprise over the failure of the Hawk eye state machinery to nab the culprit, the committee threatened to stage dharna before capital magistrate’s office if the culprit is not apprehended immediately.
NSUI appeals for proper drainage
ITANAGAR, Mar 31: National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), Papum Pare District Unit appealed to the Principal Chief Conservation of Forest (PCCF) to construct proper drainage system within National Highway 52 within Itanagar.
It said that due to damage of the drainage system in last two years monsoon, many roads have been damaged within the Itanagar and it lead to traffic problems during rainy season, particularly the PCCF office road Tinali and VIP road.
The union urged the authority to use the CAMPA scheme in proper way for the welfare of the people of the state.

Cricket World Cup final in big screen
ITANAGAR, Mar 31: As Cricket World Cup fever gripped whole of Arunachal Pradesh, the apex students’ body of the state All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) has decided to provide an opportunity to the students of college and school to witness Cricket World Cup final match to be played at Mumbai in wide screen.
AAPSU booked the Naharlagun cinema hall in advance to view the final match in big screen andwill throw open the gate for students on April 2.
AAPSU vice president (pro) Nabam Tamar felt that this will be a relaxing moment for all the cricket lovers, especially those students who are busy writing their examinations.

ITANAGAR, Mar 31: Itanagar is hosting the art exhibition cum painting workshop being organized by Lalit Kala Academy in collaboration with Arunachal Pradesh Tourism and Cultural Affairs department. The event got under way on March 29 at Hotel Arunachal Subansiri will continue upto April 2 next.
Artist from various parts of Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Assam, Delhi and Arunachal Pradesh are participating in the exhibition cum workshop.
Many art lovers thronged the workshop since its inaugural day and appreciate the initiatives taken by the organizing committee for showcasing the event in the state capital, which otherwise do not have such events for art lovers.
Earlier, the exhibition cum workshop was inaugurated by Tourism Secretary Bandana Deori.
She distributed booklets to participating artists and encouraged them to excel in their profession.

Time for promotion of sporting culture
Dear Editor,
I extend my heartiest congratulations to Yukar Sibi for setting a new national record in the 62 kg category, in the 63rd National Men’s Senior Weightlifting Championship, Bangaluru and securing the Bronze medal. I also extent my congratulations to Miss. Ranjana Devi for securing the Bronze medal in the 63 kg category, in the 26th National Women’s Senior Weightlifting Championship, Bangaluru. Both of you have made the state very proud and also we the people should be grateful that these feats have put the state into the sporting arena of the country. It has also given to the country and to the state in particular, the prospects of development and promotion of sports in the state. Hope the Govt. take a deep look into this prospect and promote and encourage a serious and devoted sporting culture in the state, like the state of Manipur has been doing at her best.
The people of Arunachal are blessed and bestowed with great sporting and physical qualities which need to be nurtured by providing platforms, resources and unending support from the state. This will surely make Arunachal as one of the largest ‘sport factories’ of the country.

Where darkness rules
Dear Editor,
There is no electricity supply in Moba Doke, Ragi Doke, Dedu Doke, Yapak Doke & Sodo Doke villages under Tirbin circle in West Siang till date even though the central’s policy for 100% illumination to all the rural villages have been initiated 10 years before. People in these area are living without electricity since 1948 ‘the independence of our country’.
Tirbin is just 3km away and Basar merely 30 km away which are enjoying 24 hours light facilities and the administration and the bureaucrats concerned has failed to supply light to all these concerned villages.
People living in this village have to live using lamp and solar light. As such people residing in these areas are living a hard life and so there is no question of development.
I would like to ask the authority concerned why people under these villages are left behind and why few of these villages are isolated.

Facilities for us
Dear Editor,
Denka and Bogoli located along Assam boundary are among oldest villages under Doimukh circle.
But, these twin villages were deprived of facilities like electricity, proper drinking water facilities and roads communication until Local MLA and Parliamentary Secretary Nabam Rebia took up the issue of development in true spirit.
Many political leaders have come and gone just by making promises which they never fulfilled.
But under the initiative of Rebia, the villages had been provided various facilities like electricity, hygienic drinking water which the villagers have never dreamed of.
Electricity to twin villages and water supply to Bogoli are the notable facilities provided under the initiative of Rebia since his election which shows the spirit of a true leadership.
I also appreciate the village panchayat leaders, youths, public and all departmental staff for their hardwork and cooperation without whom it would not have been possible for Rebia alone to materialize the things.

Ads that pop up everywhere
Dear Editor,
It is obvious that this whole world is being dominated by advertisements. Turn on your TVs, tune to a radio station, go any anywhere you will be welcomed by advertisements.
It has become a part of our life and has influenced our lifestyles too.
But I am dumbfounded at the way Pasighat town is dominated by hoardings.
One can see the signboard of Pasighat police station being garlanded by Aircel ads on it. It seems more like an Aircel office than a police station. The newly constructed gate of General Hospital Pasighat is also being decorated with ads.
Frankly, I really don’t know whether there is any rules and regulations on putting up of advertisements in Govt. offices or establishments.
But the way ads have been put in Govt Hospital and Police station is something not good to look at.
I think Pasighat has many available places where ads can be put up in a decent way.

Evolve a common Arunachalee language
Dear Editor,
We would like to appeal to the State Government, bureaucrats, various NGOs, public and community leaders and students organizations to evolve a common language for Arunachal Pradesh.
Although our state achieved the status of full-
This problems of communication gap due to differences in language among various tribes could well be felt, especially during trips to outside the state.
I faced lots of problem during my first educational tour to various destinations outside the state as we did not understand each other’s languages. This problem is also being faced by students studying out side the state.
I think Arunachal Pradesh is the only state in the country where there is no common language.
If evolved, the common language would not only bridge the communication gaps between various tribes but also foster unity, integrity among them and enable to know each other’s culture and tradition well.
Lastly, we urge upon all tribes to contribute towards evolving a common language that is understood by all.

Suo moto and illegal appointments
Dear Editor,
It would be in the interest of the state if the Itanagar permanent bench of Guwahati high court take suo moto cognizance to the news article "Around 2000 illegal appointments unearthed".
It does not augur well for the judiciary to ignore a crime of such magnitude. Why is it silent till now? The concerned departments should cancel all the illegal appointments with immediate effect.

Team Arunachal for Everest
Itanagar, Mar 31: The Governor of Arunachal Pradesh Gen J J Singh will flag off the Mt. Everest Expedition 2011 from Raj Bhavan, Itanagar on April 1.
The ‘Team Arunachal’ consists of Anshu Jamsenpa from Bomdila and Tine Mena from Roing who will try to summit the world’s highest peak Mount Everest from the South Col side.
They will carry with them the flags of India, Arunachal Pradesh and Arunachal Mountaineering & Adventure Sports Association (AMASA) which they will unfurl on the top of the world if their summit is successful.
The ceremonial flag off progamme of this historic mountaineering venture will be attended by Tapi Mra, the first Arunachalee Everester and coordinated by D K Dinglow Director of Sports & Youth Affairs and Tsering Wange President of Arunachal Mountaineering & Adventure Sports Association (AMASA).
Five cracks NDA exams
ITANAGAR, Mar 31: In news which will bring cheers to many Arunachalees, five students of Arunachal have cracked the NDA examination for the 126th batch conducted by the UPSC.
The written examination was held in August 2010 and the SSB interview was held in February 2011 in various locations of the country. Out of them, four have qualified for Army and one for the Air Force. All of them are students of Sainik School, Imphal and have appeared for class XII.
Four who have qualified for army are Hage Kapa, Yumlam Josh, Yumlam Pulu and Tage Dususow. Shimon Doke has qualified for air force. The most heartening aspect is that Yumla Josh and Yumlum Pulu belongs to Kurung Kumey district, the most backward district of Arunachal Pradesh. Their achievement can be source of inspirations for student belonging to Kurung Kumey.

Union oppose enhancement of service period
ITANAGAR, Mar 31: Arunachal Indigenous Peoples’ Union strongly urged the state government not to enhance the retirement age limit of any government employees in various departments and added that instead of enhancement the government should reduce the service period.
It further demanding the government to strict the period of transfer and posting notification of the government said that many government employees are working at same posting place for more than three years. The sitting of officer in same posting place for more than notified three years period would lead to misuse of public fund and official position by the officer, release added.
